Letter to the World

If you had the whole worlds attention for a single article in the newspaper, what would you say? That was the prompt I was given for this assignment, and being in the environmental field I only really thought of one thing to talk about. I decided to talk about the plastics crisis and how it affects third world countries. Being half Filipino I have been lucky enough to visit the country a few times and every single time I feel as though the pollution gets worse. This assignment was the my final for the course: Global Environmental Problems. This course is what shaped me into actually wanting to me a sociologist. I learned so much about ongoing problems and what our current road blocks are. This class taught me how to look beyond my initial assessment of issues and to stop relying on data and facts alone. My critical thinking skills were tested in this course along with my speaking and writing proficiency. I encourage you to read the letter I have made, maybe you could learn something new!

This is currently my favorite class that I have taken at the University of Mary Washington. It was enlightening hearing what my classmates had to say about current environmental and political problems we are facing. The topics hit especially hard for me because I have family currently living in third world countries that are actively affected by some of the issues we talk about in class. Even if students are not in the environmental field here at University of Mary Washington I will still encourage them to take this course. It can get sad sometimes with some of the topics but that just motivated me to want to become a better person and practice healthier and more sustainable habits.
